Do surfer forums really generate much traffic to the sites? And more importantly does that traffic convert?

My experience has been that most of these forums are frequented mostly by existing members looking to interact with the ladies and freeloaders, with few actual potential new sign-ups.

Toby....

Run a forum is more funny than run a website....there is some pleasure to exchnage point of view with surfers...pleasure you don't have with a classic website...and with it you can know what really want the cusomers...
The traffic is not converting as well as a TGP but where is the interactivity with your surfer in TGP ?
Existing members can attract some other to look inside the memberzone....they are our best promotion...

I think sale is not all, human contact can lead you to more sales ...
no ?

Yes, but that wasn't really my question. Speaking strictly as sales and promotion tool it seems like alot of time for little return.

Forums generally dont make sales, I agree mostly freeloaders, but it does get a site heard, creates fans, and can generate clicked traffic back to your main sites to help with link trades. And I have made decent sales from forums before, I'd rather take that free traffic than not

That depends on how much time investment is required for the "free" traffic.

True. To succeed in create a forum that gives you all th advantages jscott is talking about you really need to work hard and have a lot of patience. My forum is generating decent sales to me right now (i say decent...but not really a lot of them...let's say 5% of the sales i do), but it's 5 years old and has more than 7000 members now... and believe me, it was really hard to get there.

So...my suggestion is...don't create a forum of your own if you just want to get traffic, better post galleries on other forums (but don't do that on mine...i've set up strict rules on link posting, because i want to be the only one getting sales from there )

I have a pic forum in a different niche (Japan Porn Forums), it's doing ok so far, but forums start off very slowly (from what I hear, and from my own experience).
I'll keep posting and never give up on it, eventually it'll pick up and become successful, it may take a year or more but I'll wait

Yes,....and when you said Toby on another topic, Google see all....so when you write on a forum, you have more chances for search strings no ?
Look, for a personnal website, without speaking of sales, or traffic, a forum is a way to share with your members all informations about your website.. and it's true, that takes time , but anyway, a website takes many times, for my part, with a forum, I loose the "lost of time", because sometimes, you go in a direction where members will not follow you....and to know that, what is more than talking with them directly ?
Like you said Jscott and Nyllover, that takes a lot of patience for a Forum to get some sales about a forum, but...well....why not ?

For most of us that are one man, or one woman, shows the biggest daily battle is managing time. The number of work hours in a day is finite.

I continually have to evaluate time cost vs. return whenever starting something new. It just seems to me that the time used posting to surfer forums would be better spent doing something else with better return.
