You're right, hard to reach a decent ROI. Last time I was at WebmasterAccess met an SEO guy who gave me valuable SE tips that ended up helping my sites bigtime. There are some indirect returns to consider as well
But I do agree with you, much harder for these shows to pay off nowadays.
