I agree with all you say Toby. However there are a lot of newbies who are expecting "big" money from the web. They expect to get a site up and running and the money to flood in. Of course that is not the case.

The 4 Ps of marketing are just as relevant to the web as they are in the bricks and mortar world. Product, Price, Place and Promotion. If you make the best toothpaste in the world but it's overpriced, not on supermarket shelves, and no one knows it exists - you won't sell a lot of it! Just as important is understanding that this is a numbers game. I am not too sure how many newbies have even the basic understanding of how/where to get some stats and know even less about analysis and using the numbers for decision making!

I also agree that it's not a good idea to launch an affiliate program along with the launch of the site unless you're already experienced in building your own traffic and fine tuning tours. It's a good bet they're amongst the people who spout the "there's no money in porn" line - I keep seeing it on forums dating up to a few years back.

My site's been steadly growing, particularly over the last few months. Can't afford to sit back though and I don't want to - promotion needs to be done constantly aswell as tweaking the site. Alot of people who start their own business don't realise how much work needs to be done. And, of course, there are no guarantees!

I know they didn't update their affiliate tools for a while.

Damn, it's getting harder to find sites to promote these days.
