Default Is it time for DRM

DRM seems to be hated on every surfer board. But by who? Mostly those guys who want to rip our sites and post them as freebies everywhere. So, the legit guy gets a bit of inconvenience, but we get more security. Personally, I feel we lose more money by theft than we ever would DRM'ing our videos. Any thoughts or plans on this?

DRM=Digital Rights Management

I think it means surfers can't actually download your videos, only watch them in the members area during the time that they are a member.

More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management

Personally I think it would piss a lot of members off. Legitimate members who are downloading the stuff for personal use, not to share with others.

The surfer can download the videos and watch them as often as he likes as long as he is a member. Sure it will piss some off, but the alternative is that the pirates steal them and give them away for free. Which is worse.
This whole mess is created by thieves.

I think DRM is just like locks on doors. They really only keep out relatively honest people. Cracking DRM isn't all that complex for those heavy into file sharing. I think you're better off using a streaming only strategy if piracy of your video content is a critical enough to warrant one or the other. Streaming only can still be captured to file, but not as effeciently as cracking DRM.

Either way it comes down to whether or not you gain enough sales by not having your content shared to more than offset the sales/rebills you lose by not offering unencumbered downloads. Any extra cost and time to implement either method would also need to be considered.

Exactly. It's not like every member is doing it or even most. So why take the chance of pissing off the majority of your membership base because of a few bad apples?

Here are a few surfers thoughts on this topic:

I think if you do choose to go that route, make sure you let people know on your Tour pages that they can't actually download and save the content. NOT telling them and them finding out after they join is shady and guaranteed to piss a lot of people off.

IMO DRM is against your member - Not allowing him to view your videos when he is off line is not giving him full benefits of membership.

Pirating is an issue - Well, to some. I don't really worry about it - Every so often I will find stuff on rapidshare (with links to them all over the web), and, in fareness to those cunts at rapidshare, one email and all is removed.

Also, pirating is a form of advertising -

A good security script and good stats show what is happening with downloads and a decent htaccess to block bulkdownloaders keep things fairly tight - If stuff does go out, I have never lost much sleep over it - My job is to produce new content and deliver it to members. Members can download and save as much as they want each day - No limits - And they get 4 brand new Kirsty Blue and Kelly Dee full length movies every week 1440X1080 and fuck the bandwidth costs - it's cheap nowadays - Retention is my aim.

DRM is great for video rentals - At this moment in time, I think changing membership sites over to rental sites is the wrong move.

My 2cents worth.

You know me. We've exchanged emails before. I run MistressJessica.net and then I started up another site, Lingerieandlegs.com that I haven't kept up with though. :P But what does what sites I run have to do with anything?

I am so sorry that I did not recognize you. As for your sites, I was just curious because it wasn't listed in your profile, that's all.
